I am wondering if anyone would be able to recommend a talking watch that has a lot of features, but isn't very expensive. I don't want to spend any more than 60 bucks on it. Same with the clock.
Thanks
Look at what is available at indipendentliving.com and speaktomecatalog.com.
There are also some inexpensive but feature-loaded ones at
www.braillebookstore.com
Personally I gave up on blind specific clocks years ago. I have abraille watch but I'd never go back to a talking one or a talking clock unless it be an actual clock radio. And even then it would have to be one that didn't feature a damn rooster for an alarm. And I'd prefer one where the rooster wasn't even an option since to be quite frank I've grown to hate roosters with a passion since my mom's neighbor used to have thm and they would crow constantly ll day starting at about three in the morning. So roosters on talking watches or clocks grate on mye ars. NOt only that but even today a lot of the rooster crows sound painfully fake.
I just use my phone for such things, honestly. the minute I set that alarm with my phone and checked the time with it for the first time, I swore I'd never go back to blind specific talking clocks since. Just my thoughts. sure, the phone will cost more than $60, but if you're going to end up getting one anyway, it's worth killing two birds with one stone.
lol yeah those roosters are very annoying
I put on my Braille watch with my dress uniform recently.
One of the Officers in Charge who usually eyeballs an inspection of us coming in when there are Active Duty / captains, etc. around, looked me over and said: "Yeah, that watch meets regulation. We just never see watches anymore, what with cell phones."
Since you can't have anything clipped to the belt unless it's operational regulations (cell phones aren't), that means you'd have to fish it out of your pocket to check the time. Plus, I'm blind, so my phone would talk in order for me to check the time. So even though the Braille watch is a bit old and I don't wear it much anymore, at meetings like that it does the job. Just found Commander's comments funny: hadn't really thought about people in general not wearing watches anymore.
Actually, just for info's sake, those cheap annoying rooster watches aren't made specifically for us. They're made and sold as novelties for sighted folks but they're made in huge quantities and that's why I'm guessing they're cheap. Think about it. If somebody invented a talking clock and had it sold just to blind folks, it would be made and sold in such small quantities that the thing would end up costing a hundred dollars instead of ten.
If you do want a stand-alone clock or watch, though, even though Maxi Aids and ILA sell the biggest variety of them, check http://www.speaktomecatalog.com and http://www.futureaids.com as they have picked over what you can get and sell what I think are the better clocks out there.
I have a Sony Dream Machine alarm clock that was modified for the blind. You have several alarm sounds to choose from, and none of them are a rooster. Plus you can awake to your favorite radio station or CD. I just can't remember who was selling these modified versions, but I'm glad I got it because I love it.
This is interesting. someone recommended braillebookstore.com which I have visited before. Today I decided to try out futureaids.com which Godzilla recommended, and it's the exact same website, but you can get to it with two different addresses. I did look at their selection of time pieces, and they have those Moshi voice activated talking alarm clocks I've been hearing about and would probably buy if I didn't already have an alarm clock I really like.
I think it was IRTI that sold that Sony yers ago. Doubt it's made anymore. Yeah, exposing my geekiness/nerdiness again.
Ah yes, the Dream Machine. I heard about it, but b the time I did it was apparently no longer being made. And that would have been perfect for me. Because while I am a member of the club I hate using my cell phone as an alarm clock.
are those clocks very expensive?
If you breed, you will have an incessant alarm clock during the early years. When they become lmfao-texting teenage spazzes, it kinda works the other way: you'll be stayin' up late waitin' for them to get in.
I've had the same alarm clock for 11 years, and it's getting pretty complecated since sometimes the buttons don't work lol, but it still works. My mom randomly bought me a little clock that fits in your hand. It's voice activated and you can check the temperature with it. It's cool except sometimes it takes several times to set the alarm, so I try to keep it set at the same time haha! I've also used my booksense as an alarm clock when I didn't have mine with me, such as traveling, and it works I just don't like using it all the time, and I'm not a huge fan of using my cell phone as one either.
Well I seem to recall the Dream Machine was close to 200 bucks.
I agree with the cell phone comment. My iPhone has replaced all other time pieces, as it is with me and accessible at all times.
My android powered device a my touch 4G has replaced my Ipod as my alarm clock!. I like that my music like lincon park's "get slanted" can wake me up in the morning. :)
Marilin donated here posessed talking calculator to me and it's alaerm sounds a bit like the old pc speaker in dos games. I also use my cel phone.
